Acura Car Key Replacement: Understanding What You Actually Have
Not all Acura keys are the same, and the replacement process depends entirely on which type your vehicle uses. Older Acura models — certain Integra generations, for example — used a basic transponder key where a chip inside the plastic head must be programmed to match the car's immobilizer before the engine will start. A cut blade alone will turn the ignition but the car will not run. Mid-range models like the RDX and TLX moved to flip-style remote head keys that combine a transponder, a remote lock and unlock fob, and a mechanical blade in one unit. The MDX and newer Integra are increasingly equipped with proximity smart keys, where the car detects your key fob within range and allows push-button starting without ever removing the key from your pocket.
Each of these formats requires a different programming approach, different blank stock, and different onboard diagnostic communication. Our technicians arrive with all three categories covered. We can cut and program a replacement transponder key, clone a chip from your existing key if one is still present, generate a new proximity smart key, and pair a replacement fob to your vehicle's body control module — all at your location, without towing to a dealer.
